One year ago – on World Environment day – while on a trek to the hamlet of Mamalnyoth, located at 8500 ft above MSL, near Srinagar, we had promised the 15-odd Gujjar-herder families living there that we’d help them light up their traditional cob-huts (called Kotha in their tongue) with chargeable solar-lights since the hamlet is too remote to be fed power from the grid.
The absence of reliable lighting after sun-down, also made it difficult for them to ward off predators and walk safely in the dark. I’m so glad we were able to keep our word, all thanks to the efforts of the Schneider Electric India Foundation, and FPACL. On May 25, 2022, the hamlet was lit up with 30 Mobiya Schneider Electric Solar Lights that the Gujjar families – and especially their womenfolk- loved. The happiness everyone experienced that day was priceless! Thank you all for your support! We intend to continue this effort across the land!
Pragati Foundation is the Sustainability wing of Pragati Leadership Institute. PF works closely with its sister organization, Foundation for Peace and Compassionate Leadership (FPACL) to undertake projects that are aligned with the missions of both entities. The hills and mountains of Jammu and Kashmir have been endowed with the most beautiful forests and rivers, and meadows that one can imagine… And even though these are so remote and far away, they are inhabited by people, pastoral nomads known as Gujjars. Their life isn’t easy and yet they travel with their goats and sheep and horses all the way to higher (mountain) reaches, just to enable them to graze during the summer months. Like all other humans, they too endeavour to improve the quality of their lives.
Take a brief ‘Vlog’ journey together with Arun Wakhlu, and Bharat Wakhlu (Founding directors of FPACL in association with Schneider Electric as they personally trek to Mamalnyoth village to keep their promise to the Gujjars families living here. To serve in helping improve the quality of their day to day with a humble gift that helps in Lighting up their Lives!
